About Disaster Services

The American Red Cross responds to disasters such as hurricanes, floods, fires and other situations that cause human suffering or create human needs that those affected cannot alleviate without assistance such as the tragedies that occurred on September 11th.

On the local and national level, the Red Cross works with government, business, labor unions, religious and community organizations as well as other voluntary agencies identifying resources and roles, sharing information, and finding ways to ensure a coordinated and efficient response to any disaster that strikes.

The Red Cross works in partnership with people affected by disaster to help them return to living independently as quickly as possible.

Services Provided

The Red Cross provides the following services to people affected by disasters:

  • Sheltering and Feeding:

The Red Cross opens shelters for those evacuated or displaced by a disaster and provides meals and snacks to families and to emergency workers in impacted areas. The Chapter may also arrange short-term emergency housing in a local hotel following small disasters.
  • Individual and Family Assistance:

Red Cross interviewers meet one-on-one with families to determine their disaster- caused needs and how the Red Cross can help. The Red Cross lets clients know about other community or government resources and helps those needing long-term recovery assistance when other resources are not available or are inadequate.
  • Disaster Health Services and Disaster Mental Health Services:

When a disaster strikes, the Red Cross assists in meeting the physical and emotional health needs associated with the disaster. Assistance may include payment for replacement medication, eyewear and mental health counseling. Referrals may also be made to community agencies.
  • Contacting family in a disaster area:

If a local family member has a loved one in another region that was affected by a disaster, they can contact the local Red Cross chapter and request assistance in determining the well being of that family member.
